In order to be lean and efficient companies use multiple methods, but in most cases the simple and less costly tools are ignored. The successes of Japanese companies are mainly based on implementing human discipline through the processes known as 5S. This should be the start before re-modeling organisations. One of the key mistakes companies try do is to re- structure the organisation without standardisation using the basic tools to get a clearer picture before moving forward. This could be costly as companies would employ unnecessary & costly manpower, invest in technology that would not really be required as processes could be much simpler if the organisation work is disciplined through -5s first.

What is 5S?

5S is the name of a workplace organisation method that uses a list of five Japanese words:
The list describes how to organise a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. The decision-making process usually comes from a dialogue about standardization, which builds understanding among employees of how they should do the work towards a common goal.
It is guaranteed that if 5s is implemented with serious dedication companies can increase productivity by 20%, reduce waste by 20% and drastically reduce errors and omissions to customers.

The Shippers’ Academy Colombo can offer a comprehensive 5s program to companies who are looking at seriously implementing standards. We at SAC call it 5s-First
